“Ordinary Things” nimmt die kürzlich entstandene Skulpturenserie “NUDS” von Sarah Lucas als Ausgangspunkt und blickt auf ein künstlerisches Schaffen zurück, das sich seit über zwei Jahrzehnten mit den Möglichkeiten der Skulptur auseinandersetzt.

Zahlreiche Ausstellungen über das Werk von Sarah Lucas fokussierten ihre Rolle als eine der Hauptfiguren der britischen Kunst der 1990er Jahre. „Ordinary Things“ bietet nun eine ganz andere Sichtweise an: Diese Ausstellung von dreißig Skulpturen wendet sich viel mehr dem Skulpturalen als dem Sensationellen zu und positioniert Lucas‘ Oeuvre in einer kunsthistorischen Tradition, die sich auf die Materialien und Abläufe der Skulptur konzentriert. Von „Big Fat Anarchic Spider” (1993) bis „NUDS” (2009-2010), „Unknown Soldier” (2003) und „Jubilee” (2012), über „Suffolk Bunny” (1997-2004), „Au Naturel” (1994) und „Penetralia” (2008) stellt „Ordinary Things" Lucas’ beständiges Fragen nach der Definition von Skulptur in den Mittelpunkt. Sie arbeitet mit den „einfachen Dingen“ („ordinary things“), die unsere Umgebung und unsere Anschauungen ausmachen.

„Ordinary Things“ wurde von Lisa Le Feuvre kuratiert, der Leiterin des Bereiches Skulptur am Henry Moore Institute, und wird von einem bebilderten Katalog begleitet, der Aufsätze von Lisa Le Feuvre, Deborah Orr, Anne Wagner und Gilda Williams beinhaltet.

"Ordinary Things" takes Sarah Lucas' recent series of sculptures 'NUDS' as a starting point, looking forward and backward across an artistic practice that has engaged with the possibilities of sculpture for over two decades.

Many exhibitions of Lucas' work have focused on her as a central player within British art in the 1990s. "Ordinary Things" offers a counter position: this exhibition of thirty sculptures turns to the sculptural rather that the sensational, positioning Lucas' work within an art historical lineage that addresses the materials and processes of sculpture. From 'Big Fat Anarchic Spider' (1993) to 'NUDS' (2009-2010), to 'Unknown Soldier' (2003) and 'Jubilee' (2012), via 'Suffolk Bunny' (1997-2004), 'Au Naturel' (1994) and 'Penetralia' (2008), "Ordinary Things" identifies Lucas' consistent questioning of the definition of sculpture. Lucas works with the 'ordinary things' that form our surroundings and assumptions.

"Ordinary Things" is curated by Lisa Le Feuvre, Head of Sculpture Studies at the Institute, and is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication featuring essays by Lisa Le Feuvre, Deborah Orr, Anne Wagner and Gilda Williams.
